Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the Scott Performance Wire Help Center. If you have a specific question about our ignition components not addressed below, feel free to contact our support team directly.
What makes Scott Performance Wire different from other spark plug wire manufacturers?
Our spark plug wires are designed for performance and reliability. Our customers are race teams, high performance vehicle owners, and anyone looking for a great quality wire they can trust.
We offer both a High Performance Low Ohm wire for racing applications and a Street Performance wire for most vehicles. Our products are available with high-temp woven fiberglass sleeving, high-quality spiral core conductors for maximum energy transfer, and superior RFI suppression. We also offer custom colors and customizable boots and cap/coil configuration options.
Last but not least, we make our spark plug wires in the USA and we resistance test each and every wire before it leaves the factory (not just a continuity test, a resistance rating test so we can verify each wire is built to our specifications).
How do I determine the correct wire set for my specific engine?
You can shop for wire sets by make and model, then check the product description area before ordering to be certain the specs match your engine. If you have a custom engine or non-standard manifold setup, we recommend measuring your current wires or contacting our technical team before ordering.
We offer both vehicle-specific sets and universal kits that can be tailored to your exact needs. Our spark plug wires are offered in two distinct categories:
| High Performance Low Ohm - Optimized for power and made for racing. | Street Performance - Optimized for everyday performance and a massive upgrade over stock. |
| • 30 Ohm resistance rating* • Hi-Inductance for racing and high performance applications • .090" diameter core for strength and low impedance • .004" pure copper conductor with our proprietary 200 turns per inch winding |
• 300 Ohm resistance rating • 9MM diameter woven fiberglass sleeve is standard • Heat resistant to 1200°F • Good balance between inductance and reduced noise/RF interference • .065" diameter core • .006" copper alloy conductor with proprietary 125 turns per inch winding |
*Resistance ratings can vary as much as 10 ohms; we match sets to ensure consistency.
Additionally, you can configure our wires with a 10MM diameter wire silicone coated woven fiberglass sleeve, a 9MM woven fiberglass sleeve, or no sleeve. Our woven fiberglass sleeved wires are heat resistant to 1200°F!

What does the 'mm' measurement of a spark plug wire mean?
The measurement refers to the outer diameter of the insulation. The various sizes provide different levels of heat and wear protection. So the optimum size can depend on the heat level, location of the wire, and proximity to electronics, as the insulation can protect against excessive noise.
We offer wire thicknesses of 8.5 to 10mm with excellent noise suppression and additional woven fiberglass silicone coated sleeving allowing high-temperature heat resistance that’s rated up to 1,200 °F. They're some of the most heat-resistant spark plug wires available!
Do your spark plug wires provide radio frequency interference (RFI) suppression?
Yes. Our wires utilize a high-quality spiral wound core designed to suppress RFI. This is critical for modern vehicles equipped with sensitive electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems, radios, and GPS equipment, as it prevents electrical 'noise' from interfering with your vehicle's electronics.
However, if you're concerned about RF interference, be sure to choose our Street Performance wires. Our High Performance Low Ohm wires are likely to interfere with modern stereos because of their ultra low resistance and high inductance.
Can I order custom wire lengths or specific boot angles?
Absolutely. Scott Performance Wire specializes in custom configurations. If you have a unique header setup or a relocated coil pack, you can specify your required lengths and boot angles (such as 90-degree, 45-degree, or straight) during the ordering process. Learn more about custom orders here.

Are these wires compatible with high-output aftermarket ignition boxes?
Yes. Our wires are designed to handle the high voltage and current delivered by aftermarket ignition systems like MSD, Crane, or Mallory. The low-resistance core ensures that the maximum amount of energy reaches the spark plug.
How much heat can Scott Performance Wires withstand?
Our standard wires are rated for temperatures up to 600 °F Fahrenheit. For extreme applications, we offer additional woven fiberglass heat sleeving that can withstand even higher temperatures up to 1200 °F. High heat resistance is important when wires run adjacent to exhaust headers.
Do I need special tools to install a universal wire set?
If you purchase a Universal or Fit-Your-Own kit, you will need a high-quality wire crimping tool to attach the terminals to the wires. However, if you purchase a Ready-to-Install set, no special tools are required; they are pre-crimped and ready to snap onto your plugs and distributor/coil.
Will upgrading my spark plug wires increase my horsepower?
Indirectly, yes.
While spark plug wires do not "create" horsepower, they both:
- Prevent the loss of power caused by weak or inconsistent spark, and
- Improve the timing of the combustion spark
A perfectly timed and full-strength electrical impulse will improve combustion efficiency, as it helps the spark plugs do their job. If your current spark plug wires are limiting performance, a new set will unlock more power as well as improved throttle response and engine efficiency.
How often should I replace my performance spark plug wires?
For all vehicles, we recommend inspecting spark plug wires every 30,000 miles and replacing any wire that shows cracks in the boots or brittleness in the outer jacket. You can also test for arcing with a spray bottle and a fine mist of water. If you find any issues, be sure to replace the whole set - the damage you can see is the proverbial tip of the iceberg.
For racing applications, wires should be replaced each season or sooner.
Do Scott Performance Wires come with a warranty?
Yes, we stand behind the quality of our work. We warrant all products sold to be free and clear of defects in materials and workmanship for one year after purchase date. However, once a product is installed, the purchaser must assume all responsibility for malfunction, damage or misuse.
Can I contact customer support for technical advice for my specific engine build?
If you have questions about fitment or technical specifications, you can reach our expert team online or by calling our customer service line during standard business hours. Our team has decades of combined industry expertise and we're happy to help you choose the perfect ignition solution for your project.
What is the difference between solid core and spiral core wires?
Solid core wires use twisted metal and were common before the 1960s. However, they emit significant electromagnetic interference (EMI), which can cause malfunctions in modern electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems, digital gauges, and sensors. Scott Performance Wire specializes in spiral core (carbon core) designs. These provide the low resistance of a solid core but with superior EMI suppression, making them safe and effective for everything from street cars to race-ready engines.
Are Scott Performance Wire products suitable for daily drivers or just race cars?
While we are a primary supplier for professional race teams, we also manufacture high-quality wires specifically for performance street engines. Whether you need wires for a daily driver, a restored classic, or a high-horsepower race machine, our wires are a reliable performance option.
Can I buy individual replacement wires or only full sets?
While we primarily sell complete sets to ensure consistent performance across all cylinders, please contact us directly if you have a specific need for individual replacement components or specialized leads.
Does Scott Performance Wire offer private labeling?
Yes. In addition to our own brand, we provide private labeling services for other companies in the automotive industry. Our reputation for quality makes us a trusted partner for businesses looking to offer premium spark plug wires under their own name. Contact us for details on how to get started.
How do I know which boot angle I need?
Boot angles are determined by the clearance between your spark plug and surrounding components like exhaust manifolds or headers. We offer various angles to ensure the wire can be connected securely without making direct contact with hot surfaces or being forced into a sharp bend.
